The Entrepreneurial Career
Whenever you think of a career what comes to mind? If you think about a doctor, lawyer, banker, accountant or even corporate employee then you’re not unlike most people. Society considers a career to be something that you go to school to obtain a basic standardized knowledge and then develop the necessary specialized skills of the trade. The process takes years of study and practice before one can master a chosen career field and then rise to the top. Regardless of the career you choose if you rise to the top 2%, you will retire a multi-millionaire.ÂThe good news for entrepreneurs and business owners is that if you rise to the top 2% of your industry, you too will retire a multi-millionaire. Actually, you’ll retire with about twice the wealth of the top 2% of those in any traditional ‘career’.
However, in order to rise to the top 2% you have to treat your business as a career. This includes studying your industry for as long as someone would study for their career. Then start practicing the skills, applying the knowledge and implementing your ideas. And to top it off you have to put just as much, if not more work into the business plus you carry the responsibility and stress of financial performance. So why do the top 2% business owners retire wealthier than the top 2% of those in any career? It’s a combination of factors: 1. Greater risk means less people will get into their own business, 2. No corporate or professional organization to mandate how much you can earn, 3. Freedom to direct and redirect your business to pursue the most profitable opportunities. So if you’ve decided to get into your own business understand that it is as much a career as any other career. The difference is that there are no rules to follow and you’re on your own to develop your knowledge, skills and make the right decisions.
